A search update review
First a suggestion. If you just need to look up a single,
known telephone number, don't go online to do it.
Simply walk
to the phone, pick up the phone book (you know, the one with
pages in it) and let your fingers, as they say, do the
walking.
On the other hand, if you're after multiple numbers, need
to create a mailing list, or aren't sure exactly who it is you
need to ring- let your mouse do the walking.
Whitepages with Attitude
The home page is smart and slick
with just a few adverts to slow things down.
Head
for the arrow icon to start your telephone search, or choose
from one of the other menu selections, such as the postcode
finder or world time and dialling codes list. (And yes, you're
right- all of these functions are available in the paper
version.
Your number's up...
Type in the name (as much as you
can as it's a required field), the state (choose from the drop
down menu) and the area- the capital city or the area outside
the capital city.
For SA that equates to Adelaide or anywhere
past Gepps Cross...
Choose a search type (Residential or Business /Government)
and hit the Start Search button
That's all folks...
Well,
almost all. Whitepages
Online returns a list of hits and close
hits. For you to peruse (or print out).
Metropolitan numbers
also have a little 'map button'- one click and a small
UBD map of the address pops up to.
Overall
Whitepages
online is a few steps up from the paper version in a few
areas. It's a shame the search can't be limited a little more
(rural SA is still a big place!) and the search engine isn't
real flash at picking up acronyms or misspellings.
Still, it
beats searching through tens of paper versions. Oh, and yes,
there is a Yellow
Pages too.
